Spain beat Australia to reach Hopman Cup final

Spain has grabbed its place in the final of the Hopman Cup after Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez took the first set of her singles match with Australian Sam Stosur 6-4.

In her game, Sanchez dismantled Sam Stosur 6-4, 6-1 and Tommy Robredo defeated Lleyton Hewitt by 6-2, 6-4.

In another match, Sanchez and Robredo then beat the Australians by 6-3, 3-6, 10/7 in the mixed doubles to win the final spot in the mixed team event.

The one set promises that whatever the outcome of the tie, Spain will end on top of Group A in the mixed team event, a traditionalistic warm-up for this month's Australian Open.

In Group B, Britain gained the top spot against Spain even though Russia and Kazakhstan remains in contention.

Britain, headed by world number four Andy Murray, take over Russia during their concluding round-robin match on Friday, whereas Kazakhstan confront Germany.

Meanwhile Spain, winners in 1990 and 2002, will take on the winners of the other round-robin group.
