Spain government makes broadband compulsory for all

In a statement, Spanish Telecommunications minister said that there are plans to add broadband to the country’s so-called ‘universal service’, which guarantees reasonably priced telephone service to citizens. The plan is aimed at offering affordable broadband with speeds of at least 1 Mbps to Spanish residents by the year 2011.

The government is searching for the service provider, who will get universal service funds to include broadband services to any home as a part of its service.

According to the government, a reliable broadband connection in the remote areas can only be provided by using wireless technology in the place of ADSL.

Spain’s government estimates the expenses for developing and funding of universal broadband access between $20 billion and $350 billion.

Government believes that a clear policy road map will help to attain the goal of providing a truly affordable high speed internet access all over the US.

On the contrary, some industry groups have criticized the 1 Mbps speed for being too low and too slow, and said that such speeds are already available to all broadband users.
