Groupo Agbar Plans Investments in Latin America

Grupo Agbar, a Spanish company dedicated to services, distribution or treatment of water, is looking at possible investment opportunities in different countries including the United States, Chile, Mexico, Cuba and Colombia, as well as in Asia.
Agbar, constituted by more than 230 companies and with over 130 years of history, already has a presence in Chinese as well as Korean market, with a leading spot in water concessions in Chile.
In an interview, Jordi Mercader, Agbar chairman said, “We have €1.6 billion ($2.21 billion) available between cash and debt to spend.”
After saying that the ratings in the water segment have not dropped much, Mr. Mercader clarified that there are no other major acquisitions under discussion.
Agbar, which during the first six months of 2008 earned the equivalent of $230 million, was established in 1867 in Liege as Compagnie des Eaux de Barcelone by an investor from France and Catalonia.
The company’s main headquarters are in Barcelona and the chairman is Jordi Mercader Miró.
